Year 5 2017

Mrs Law - Year 5 Class Teacher

Hello my name is Mrs Law and I would like to share with you a little about Year 5! They are an enthusiastic, energetic and creative class who: enjoy maths – especially competing against each other to become times tables rock stars; bringing history to life as they perform their own Egyptian mummification;  creating narrative that is brought to life with adventurous vocabulary and work and share exciting books starting with Rick Riordan’s Kane Chronicles – The Red Pyramid. Equally, they work enthusiastically as a team to support each other to create a fun learning environment.

The children are active and curious learners and their enthusiasm is reflected in the efforts that they put into all aspects of their work.  Their pride in their work is reflected in the beautiful and imaginative presentation displayed in their books. As Year 5 the class realise that this will be indeed a challenging year as they move into upper key stage 2. However, their positive attitude will ensure they all reach their true potential together – no one will be left behind!

My name is Mrs Myson and I have worked at this school for nearly 15 years. I have worked throughout the school but I am current the teaching assistant in Year 5.

In my spare time I enjoy travelling but I am currently awaiting the birth of my two grandsons and I am sure they will keep me very busy.

Topics

'Pharoahs'

Our topic this term is all about Pharoahs. Year 5 will be travelling back 5000 years to meet Pharaohs, Egyptian gods, pyramids and mummies!

Children will go into the service of Ramose – Chief Embalmer – and as apprentices they will be helping to prepare a Pharaoh for his last and most important journey into the Underworld.

PE Sessions:

Please have PE kits available in school all week.

Year 5 P.E. is timetabled for Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon.

Reading at Home:

Please make sure you hear your child read at home every day. Reading aloud helps your child to not only build fluency but enables them to read more accurately to punctuation – leading to a better understanding of its impact in their own writing.

Your child will receive 1 learning point a day for bringing in their signed Reading Record and will also receive a raffle ticket daily, which will enable them to be entered in a weekly reading raffle.

Homework

In addition to daily reading children will receive homework each Friday (to be returned the following week).

  • This will be either paper based or set on the schools Mathletics site (please ask Year 5 staff if you do not have a username and password)
  • Weekly spellings based on the common exception words

In year 5 treating everyone equally, in a respectful manner, is important and we have clear rules and expectations. We reward and celebrate good learning behaviours and readiness to learn.
