Year 5

Miss Clark - Year 5 Class Teacher

I'm the teacher in Year 5 Miss Clark. I started working at Kingston in September last year and everyone has been really welcoming.

When I'm not at school I like to spend time with my friends and family, go shopping, watch films and explore new places.  I have a dog Pippa and like to take her on walks, although she is getting old now so can't go too far! I also have a cat called Bailey.

I enjoy working with the children at Kingston because they are always eager to learn new things and push themselves to further their understanding.

Mrs Mitchell - Teaching Assistant

I'm Mrs Mitchell the teaching assistant for Year 5. I also run the enrichment classes in 'The Base'.

I live with my husband, daughter , two cats (Willow and Rolo) and a hamster!  I love art and all things creative.

Topics

This term our topic will be about....

'Allotments'

This term our topic is Allotments! We will be learning about plants, where they grow, what they need to grow, parts of a plant and how they reproduce.

Help your child to create their own tray secret garden, including small plants and other garden features.

Other topics we have covered this year are....

'Scream Machine'

We will be learning about theme parks around Britain. We will be learning about forces used to make roller coasters safe, the cost of visiting and building theme parks and in Literacy we will be trying to persuade Ms Pearson to allow us to visit a theme park as well as advertising our own brand new theme parks.

Help your child to build their own moving ride! What will make it go? What forces are in action during the ride? This project will need to be handed in before Friday 19th May as we will be looking at some of the children’s designs the following week.

'Pharoahs!'

We will be learning about the life and times of the Ancient Egyptian!

Help your child to create the inside of a model pyramid. Who was buried there? What have they taken to the afterlife? What does this tell us about them? It could be a real pharaoh or a fictional one.

Also please remember the importance of reading at home with your child every night, practicing their spellings and times table targets.

Every time your child reads at home and brings their reading bags into school they will get a learning point and a raffle ticket to be drawn in assembly for the chance to win a new book. Your child has been given a book mark with questions on to help them think about their reading.

Children will be bringing home a spelling sheet with spellings on for each week. To help children to learn their spellings they could write them in a range of sentences, create rhymes to help them remember the spelling and illustrate the word.

Stargazers! We have been learning about space!

Your child created models of our solar system and picked one of the planets to write an in depth fact file about – has anything ever landed there? What is the atmosphere like? Does it have water? What else do we know about the planet?

Beast Creator! We will be learning about different animals, their diets and habitats, and creating our own minibeasts.
Help your child to create a fact file about a favourite animal. Include where it lives, what it eats, what type of animal it is. You could include maps, food chains and webs, pictures and diagrams and anything else you think will make your work look fabulous.

PE Sessions

P.E is on a Friday so please make sure you have your P.E Kit.

Class rules

In year 5 treating everyone equally, in a respectful manner is important and we have clear rules and expectations. We reward and celebrate good learning behaviours and readiness to learn.

Other things you may need to know

Reading at Home

Also please remember the importance of reading at home with your child every night, practicing their spellings and times table targets.

Every time your child reads at home and brings their reading bags into school they will get a learning point and a raffle ticket to be drawn in assembly for the chance to win a new book. Your child has been given a book mark with questions on to help them think about their reading.

Homework

This will be given on a Friday. Deadline for return will be the following Friday, although it always advisable to return it before this in case of problems. Both Reading and Maths (every alternate week) will be set online Active Learn. If parents or pupils have difficulty accessing the internet or require new logins do not hesitate to send a request in via letter or speak to any of the Year Five team.  Spellings will be given in paper form and will be based on the Common Exception Word Lists. This list is part of the new curriculum and consists of words that do not follow the normal spelling rules. This list of words will also feature on end of Key Stage Tests (SATS). Spellings will be tested on Friday.

Children will be bringing home a spelling sheet with spellings on for each week. To help children to learn their spellings they could write them in a range of sentences, create rhymes to help them remember the spelling and illustrate the word. Children will also bring home the Y5/6 spelling sheet from the national curriculum, this is a list of around 100 words the government expects most children to be spelling correctly by the end of year 6.

Magic Maths will be continuing from last year. I will assess each child on the times table they left year 4 working towards and set an appropriate target. Once every child has a target there will be a display in class where you can keep track of your child’s individual target and find out exactly what they need to do to move onto the next target.
